Econnecting: Promoting sustainable solutions for urban-rural mobility

28 November 2023

"Econnecting. Greener and better-connected communities" is among the thirty networks funded by the European programme URBACT IV, which aims to drive change all over Europe by enabling the cooperation and idea exchange amongst cities within thematic networks and by sharing knowledge and good city practices in a participatory way.

The network “Econnecting” involves nine cities in developing strategies for a sustainable mobility in urban and rural areas, promoting inclusive anecological models for commuting: Orihuela (Spain), Ormož (Slovenia), Nagykálló (Hungary), Dytiki Mani (Greece), CIM Viseu Viseu Dão Lafões (Portugal), Tori Vallavalitus (Estonia), Ennis (Ireland), Berane (Montenegro) and Unione della Romagna Faentina (Italy), which is the Lead Partner of this network.

These cities share common characteristics, including size, population, geographical structure, and similar needs, making collaboration essential to bring about positive change within their respective communities.

Econnecting’s mission

"Econnecting" focuses on developing sustainable mobility solutions that bridge the gap between urban and rural areas, while also embracing the imperative shift towards eco-friendly transportation. The network recognizes that certain segments of the population, specifically women and the elderly, face exclusion from transportation services due to a lack of digital literacy (digital gap) and equal opportunities (gender gap).

This ambitious initiative strives to tackle these challenges by fostering a holistic approach that considers both environmental and social well-being. The partners will work together to design innovative mobility solutions that address these issues, providing greater inclusivity and ensuring that everyone can access and benefit from modern transportation systems. The project's ultimate goal is to create greener and better-connected communities, where mobility is efficient, sustainable, and accessible to all.

Key Objectives

"Econnecting'' aims to reduce the carbon footprint of transportation through the implementation of green and sustainable mobility solutions. This approach aligns with the broader European commitment to environmental sustainability and ecological transition. Recognizing the digital gap as a barrier to transportation access, the project will work towards closing this divide, making sure that everyone, regardless of age or gender, can utilize modern transportation services. Moreover, the network strives to create a more equitable society by addressing the gender gap in transportation, ensuring that women have equal access and participation in mobility services.

Conclusion

The "Econnecting" network, spearheaded by the Union of Romagna Faentina and supported by an array of European partners, is a pioneering endeavor that aspires to transform the way we think about urban-rural mobility. By promoting eco-friendly transportation, digital inclusivity, and equal opportunities, the project will not only improve the daily lives of residents but also contribute to a more sustainable and equitable future for all. With this collaborative effort, the "Econnecting" network is set to lead the way towards greener, more attractive, and more accessible cities.
